Freelance or WHAM: Find One More Hour a Day

I read an article a year ago from a freelance writer who made $100 000 a year. At the time I listened intently, because I thought he was one of a handful in the world. Today I know better. This person talked about finding time to write enough magazine articles to earn $100 000 a year.

Since then I have come up with a few of my own methods of buying a 27 hour day.

Time Management

Time management is an intense topic. There are hundreds of articles and books on the topic, and they all say the same two things, prioritize and toss out the junk. Tossing out the junk is a big thing for work at home moms. I once knew a woman who had about 30 totes. She put her toddlers toys in them and changed the box once a day. That way the children had new toys to play with every day and she had less to pick up.

One big thing for work at home and small business owners is a good filing system. Don’t make your own, learn to do the job right. There is a reason why certain methods are taught in business school, high school, and in advanced education – they work the best.

To quote a woman I use to work with “clutter kills."?

Organization

Organization can save one hour a day. Time is wasted while looking for misplaced items. The best piece of advice for small business owners and freelancers came from my mom “Everything has a place, put it there."? My mom organized the house so there was a place for everything. Everyone knew where that place was and learned to put that item away when finished. In my opinion, there is no excuse (except loss of control) for a household where the wife must spend a few hours a day picking up after children.

If you have work to do that earns money, that is your job, no matter how little you earn.
