Stop Whining and Start Writing

It it because I am getting older?

Is it because I have spent more than 10 years in the writing business?

Is it because I have been a writer, in house editor, freelance editor, and publisher?

When I started in the writing industry junior editors ran errands, got coffee, worked all weekend writing rejection letters for the slush pile, and then were fired.

When I started writing, we sold 1500 word articles for $2.00. We were paid .05 a word if we were famous. We wrote because we loved writing.

Now, writers are upset because they need to write 2/3 of a page, double spaced, and get $4.00 for it. How long does it take to write 200 words? Writing and research included, it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Work at home, set your own hours, and making money in your slippers, no BA needed, anyone can apply. Plus, the government will let you write off your computer costs, Internet costs, part of hour house costs. No traveling to work - no work clothes - no office politics - no second car.

Work six hours a day and make $48.00 - About $250.00 a week, no lunch expense, fuel expense, and you are home with the kids...and this is in stead of interning for $75.00 a week like most of the university grads with BAs in English are doing at publishing houses.

I would say it is a very good deal for any writer who is not in the .75 a word bracket.

But then - that is just the opinion of an old timer.
