Why are Writers Selfpublishing and Turning to Ebooks?

Dream of Eagles, Jack Whyte's series of historical novels set in King Arthur's time earned the reputation for being historically accurate - popular - and bestsellers.

But...

"I had four bestsellers on Canadian lists and I still couldn't quit my day job, not until they broke out in Britain and Europe."

the Kelowna, B.C. author wrote a new trilogy about the Knights Templar- already a bestseller in Canada - Knights of the Black and White (Penguin) will be out in Europe next summer. Of course, Whyte's newest books is set to 'outrage some people' who (like Da Vinci Code) will take the fiction novel as truth. But, it didn't establish his career.

This is why many authors are by stepping the publishers and going straight to self publishing. Yes, there have been self published books on the best-seller's lists. Yes, there have been famous self published authors...and yes, it is easier to pay the bills - or at least, make as much as you would writing for a traditional publisher.

I read the entire story in MaCleans - Canada's national news magazine.
