Work At Home Woes - Freelance Morality

Do you want to make money?

Do you want to work at home?

Well, I have some sad news for you - you cannot do it on your terms. You cannot tell the Internet how it will operate, and whether you believe every client should be operating on what you believe are ethical terms.

If this is your attitude, then I am sorry to tell you that you will not succeed in a work at home job. The Internet spans many countries. What is illegal or unethical in one is perfectly acceptable in another. And, what most people believe is illegal is often warped and twisted beyond recognition.

Work at home opportunities give people a chance to make a living while they freelance from their home. Do you want to operate a drop-ship WAHM opportunity that you purchased from a legitimate company on e-bay? Are you going to include content to increase your rank and improve sales? Then someone will call you a splog.

Are you are freelance writer? Do you want to get paid to write articles and blogs? Then, you are falling into a grey area. If you write 10 articles on bedding - where do you think they will be used?

If you are a journalist, do you concern yourself with the emotional effects of an article - or do you write to satisfy your publication?

If you are a virtual secretary working for a company like www.teamdoubleclick.com - or for local businesses writing business plans and adcopy - do you run a BBB check before accepting the project? Of course not.

If you are a professional blogger - well, let me just state that a lot of people will not like you. Not because you are doing anything wrong, but because the search engines have not caught up with the current clash between algorithms and social network optimization - when they do, the problem will be solved.

However - if you adopt immature ethics based on propaganda and gossip then it will show in your work. The effects may be subtle, but the result will be less bids, less work, and fewer contacts.
