How to Avoid the Vanity Press and Sell Your Novel: Pt 3

Warnings:

Ask a publisher how many copies they sold last year. There are many publishing companies that are nothing more than promotional launch pads for public speakers, editors, and teachers. A publisher should be able to sell more than 1000 copies of a book. Yes, I know that this number is low, but most of the 5000 publishing companies in North America do not hit this number.

Do not use Writer’s Digest Market guide as your bible. This is nothing more than an advertising medium, like the yellow pages, where people pay to be in it. I am not sure if WD actually checks the legitimacy of their listings, but I know of at least five publishers in there who are not only shady, but I wouldn’t trust them to walk my dog.

Do not sign a contract that pays you a royalty on the NET instead of COVER PRICE of a book. I have a friend who did and she sold more than 200 copies of a book, which should have earned her about $200 - $250.00. Instead, she received about $5.00. Paying on NET is another way a shady vanity press gets around the typical warnings.

"Don’t pay to have your book published." Authors are always told this, but when you sign a contract that pays NET, you will have to pay for the book’s editing, cover, page layout, print set up, and everything from office time to phone calls, to your share of the office’s photocopy and coffee expense.
