I just read an article written by another publisher and had to laugh.
Here are some things you should NOT do if you want to be published.
1. Don't tell the publisher that your book is going to be a bestseller and they need to cater to you.
2. Do not include a list of promotion items you expect from the publishing company including things like television appearances.
4. Do not plagiarise a bestseller or a classic. Do you really think we can't recognize a classic or a bestseller?
5. Do not tell the publisher that you expect to make X amount of money, or you want the rest as a bonus.
6. Do not submit your manuscript in handwriting.
7. Do not phone me up at 3 am to tell me that you wrote a great novel that will make us rich, how much will I pay you.
8. Don't tell me that your book will make us rich.
9. Don't compare yourself to Mary Higgins Clark, Nora Roberts, Grisham or anyone else.
10. Don't expect me to be impressed with your BA. There are more English majors working at McDonalds than there are English majors working in the publishing industry.
Last - don't send me your novel if you have done nothing to advance your career as a writer, build a fan base, prepare yourself for the life of a public figure, or even taken a writing course to learn how to write well. If you cannot even build a free web site, and build a mailing list at bravenet.com, I won't believe that you'll work hard for our company.
