Can your web host limit a web site's ability to rank high and get crawlers to review the site? Yes.
The first thing you need to ask a web host company is whether you will have your own IP address, or a shared one.
Some website hosting companies host literally dozens and dozens of websites from one IP address. This can be confusing for crawlers.
These hosting sites are popular. Some of the larger web hosting sites are little more than 'webs' or even just affiliate hosting companies.
Also, a smaller web host may not be 'clean' enough to facilitate crawling.
From the crawler's POV, the 'community sites' are not considered 'executive quality' - the same as a blog at a site like this. Writingup itself will attract Google and get hits - but none of the blogs here will ever be considered 'executive quality' by crawlers.
This is a catch22
1. We don't need crawlers because the community is self sustaining with its own network that brings hits to our blogs.
2. As our blogs grow - we want executive status - even though we don't need it.
The same will work with your website. A community like the one at www.wordpress.com may bring in a lot of visitors, but only from the internal community.
Domain Names
The length of time you own a domain name - and the length of time that you buy it for, have a direct effect on the crawler's impression of your site.
A new domain name will never rank as high as an old one. Also, if you are buying your domain name year by year - stop. You should buy the domain for at least 5 years - 10 years is best. Crawlers, especially Google who owns the WHOSITs data base, do pay attention to the length of time that a domain name is owned - and it does effect a web site's rank.
IF you can buy an old domain name, do so, even if you park it. Also, there are ways to use domain names to improve your rank. IF you are a freelance writer, then you might 'park' the following domains on your site.
www.ghostwriting.me.com
www.articles.me.com
www.freelance_writer.me.com
All of these are made from the domain www.me.com Most good web hosting companies allow you to make 50 parked domains, whether they are sub webs, like the ones above (which you do not buy or pay for - just make them and park them), or they are other domain names.
The first word leads to a sub web that can eventually, as you grow, hold a 'landing page.' However, at first, they can just have a redirect to your home page.
