Write What You Know

All writers have heard the saying, Write What You Know. Well, then how come so few writers take that advice to heart? It is the difference between success and failure for many. Take travel writing. There are hundreds of posts published monthly, promoting holiday areas in the world - places the writer never visited.

In fact many freelance writers do not even take the time to visit travel websites and learn the details about a place.

Take a second look at the practice. First, the cost of the trip is 100% deductible. Second, booking travel online saves hundreds of dollars. A Moroccan hotel for 30euro a night? The entire trip for less than $500USD? 50 good articles pay the money back.

The promotional value of actually travelling will increase the amount the travel writer is paid to write, to $20USD, meaning that only $25 articles to refund the money. It makes sense to travel before writing travel information.

Before bidding on your next project, think about the value the client will receive if you write about 'what you know.'
