Backing Up The Computer is a Pain!

After two crashes this year on my PC, I have finally surendered and decided to hire a backup service. It is one of those things that I am now asking why I didn't do it sooner. It wasn't wisdom that encouraged me to go on the net and start looking for backups, it is the fact that Visa has decided to disconnect my DVD burner - so now I can't enjoy that mind-bending task of backing up the desktop, one DVD at a time.

Of course, I was warned that it might take a day or two for the service to backup everything -because that is what they will do - back up everything. And, I haven't figured out how I can get it back - or how - and whether I can just ask for some of it back.

At the moment, all I care about is backing up my PC somewhere 'safe.' I figure that, if my DVD burner is not working, then the odds that all my backup disks working is very low. So, in effect - I am sitting here with no back up for the second time this year.

It's a cool service, $4.50 a month, per computer - and it updates automatically every time the computer has been idle for 30 minutes.

I could say that this was inspired by my wisdom and years of experience - Not. Instead, when I went to boot up this morning, I stared at a black screen for 10 minutes before the computer turned on. So, before I do anything, try to resolve any problems, or shut my computer off again - I am making sure that everything is backed up.

There are a lot of services - I chose Mozy. Not only because the price, but because it is Vista safe, and because it was easy to use. It works a little like 'go to my PC'.

At the moment I am backing up a picture called 'dog drinking coffee' - I guess, the intelligent thing to do would have been to clean up my desktop THEN backup - but if I was that savvy, I would have used one of these services years ago ... but then... look at all the blogs you wouldn't have been able to read about my mis-adventures with computer crashes and recovering datathis year.
