My husband recently joined a charity. People donate cars and the men fix them up. Once they are fixed and certified, they are given to people who need help. There really isn't much regulations needed to run a legit system, insurance is the only 'problem' that these charities run into.
Many people love the idea, they can receive an income tax receipt for the black book value of the car - which is often substantually more than they would receive if they traded the car in, or tried to sell it on their own.
It is easy to check a charity and see if it is legit. All charities are regulated and organized. It only takes a phone call. Once the charity is deemed legit, the income tax statement can be used to reduce the amount of income tax a person will pay that year.
One of the most beneficial charities is those that accept car donations.
