There are several charities that are easy to set up, receive a lot of public support, and government money.
One of the most prolific is the car donation charity. These charities can benefit the shop classes at local high schools, give local garages the opportunity to 'write off' some donations, and give cars to people who cannot afford to buy a reliable vehicle.
People submit their used car donation to the charity who have it fixed up. The vehicle is fixed up. Then donated to someone who needs it. This can give someone a full time job, benefit the community, and give work to local tradesmen or support the local schools.
