2Is it that I am a Woman or I Work At Home? - Don't Tell Me My Business Isn't REAL

Here are some things people have said to me since I moved my office into my home.

"It must be nice to be a stay at home mom."

As apposed to a what? Mom that never goes home? Since when is being a stay at home mom a social designation?

"What do you do with your time?"

Ah - work? I work about 10-12 hours a day.

"It is so nice you have a hobby that earns you some money."

Hobby? I home the people whose paychecks I write don't start thinking of this as a hobby.

"You don't work."

What is your definition of work? I thought work was anything that generates an income.

"What a waste of time."

I wasn't wasting time until you showed up.

"Why don't you do daycare on PA days and help everyone out."

Hmm, why don't you take My kids on PA days so I can get a real project done, instead of blogging and answering emails because the kids need so much attention.

"Why don't you volunteer and do something useful for the community."

"What! How can you charge so much. You work at home."

What does working at home have to do with the quality of my product?

"Why can't you do this for me. All you do is sit at a computer all day."

The fact is, I run a real publishing company. I have people who will not get paid if I stop viewing my business as a real business. The booksellers consider my company a real one. I don't have any more, or less, work than I did when I ran my business out of home.

What baffles me is that a friend sells toys at home parties and she is considered a good wife because she is helping to pay the bills.

When I comment that I am the primary income earner at our house my comment is met with confusion and blank stares.
