Ignore Rejection Letters and Critiques

I have a friend who is now a famous writer. She was rejected seventy times before selling her first book. Now, she has five publishers and more than twenty books out. All this happened in less than five years. Oz was rejected more than 100 times, and almost every publisher of that day turned Little Women away before one accepted the book.

Editors are just people like you and me. They have training, but they have no special knowledge of the book world. They reject and select books based on their gut feelings, sometimes they win, sometimes they loose.

One simple word of advice, never take a critique at face value if the person is waiting for money. Never take a publisher’s critique at face value. Most publishers are looking for a single theme or character growth style. Finally, if you really want to succeed, take a writing course.

Of course, I have a friend who makes so much money self-publishing her books that she would rather vanity publish than find a 'real' publisher.
