I read an article several years ago that claimed 'children who play with a jigsaw puzzleare better at math and science.' My children were young at the time, less than five. It was easy to get them into puzzles, as their father plays with them all the time. He does the huge puzzles with only a few colors, or similar shapes all through the puzzles. Incidentally, he is a wiz at math and can complete complex calculations in his head. It is hard to know whether the benefit is the result of the jigsaw puzzle, or something else.
I found that puzzles are also a great form of stress relief. I can stop working for a few minutes, place a few pieces. Whether it is 'refocusing' my attention that helps. Or, focusing on something that is not important. The effect of playing with a jigsaw puzzlefor ten minutes is more relaxing than anything else I know.
