How to Find a Freelance Editor

New Blog for Novel Writers

There are many books out there that would have been published if the author hired a freelance editor to help polish the manuscript.

However, there are many more writers who are abused and scammed by fake editors. Here are some tips for helping you find a good freelance editor.

1. Look for editors who do not brag about themselves, but can talk about their client’s publishing success.

2. Education does not make an editor. BA, MLA, and even a few published books or articles do not make a good editor. If you wrote a book, find an editor who worked for a book publishing company. If you want to break into the magazine industry, find an editor who worked for a magazine.

3. Never start without a contract that states the project will be finished by a certain date, and for a pre-defined fee. Never work with an editor who agrees to work with you before reading your work.

4. Talk to twenty editors before you sign with one. Don’t assume that a great website, or an ad in a writing magazine means the editor is a professional.

Take a look at the Preditor and Editor section of the Science Fiction Writer's Association Webpage.

Remember - for every good editor there are two scam artists who are freelancing because they cannot find a good job.
